There is a Yoruba mythology that consciousness, referred to as the “head”, has a dual nature, a physical dimension called the “outer head” and a spiritual entity referred to as: “the inner head”. In Yoruba cosmology, special attention is paid to the head as not only the seat of the body, its highly venerated, this consciousness is best interpreted in a dual format, that is "Ori inu" (inner head) as well as the physical head "Ori ita. The two are addressed separately and even worshipped in certain religious and spiritual sects.
This belief is so strong among the South Western part of Nigeria and I have tried interpreting it in an abstract format in some of my portrait series.
I tried to depict the two aspects of the internal and external head in this painting titled "Self portrait".
The painting titled, Self-Portrait, in my work, is more about the portrait of the intangible self, rather than a literal portrait of the artist.
